African Games: Excitement as Nigerian wrestlers win six gold medals

Nigeria’s women’s wrestling team on Sunday claimed six gold medals at the ongoing 13th Africa Games in Ghana with superstar Odunayo Adekuoroye leading the pack, Reelradio.com.ng reports.

Aside from Adekuoroye, a world championship silver medalist, veteran Blessing Oborududu, an Olympic silver medalist also claimed a gold medal. Others include Reuben Hannah Amarachi, Kolawole Esther Omolayo, Ogunsanya Christianah Tolulope, and Mercy Genesis.

Adekuoroye, a regular medal hopeful at the Africa Games on Sunday defeated Ghana’s Zainab Hassoune to win a gold medal in the women’s freestyle 57kg category while Reuben Hannah Amarachi also claimed gold in the women’s 76kg freestyle category beating Ivory Coast’s Youin Amy 10-0.

In the 68kg women’s freestyle final, veteran Blessing Oborududu defeated Cameroon’s Blandine Ngiri 14-4. Kolawole Esther Omolayo defeated Egypt’s Gharam Moustafa Askar 11-0 in the 62kg freestyle event while Ogunsanya Christianah Tolulope ran over Ivory Coast’s Bakayoko Celine-Josee 11-0 in the 53kg freestyle event.

Mercy Genesis had no problems in the 50kg freestyle event dispatching off Egypt’s Nada Medani Mohamed 7-0.

President of the Nigeria wrestling federation, Daniel Igali, an Olympic gold medalist has showered praises on the girls for making the nation proud at the Games.

“Six athletes, six gold medals. You made your country proud. Finally, some good news to cheer up Nigeria. I could not be more proud.  Congratulations!”

Nigeria is now fourth on the medals table with 7 gold, 7 silver, and 12 bronze medals.
