Dutch Eredivisie champion Ajax have reached an agreement with Middlesbrough to sign Chuba Akpom. The Amsterdam club will pay €12m plus €2m in add-ons for last season’s Championship top goal scorer, Reelradio.com.ng reports.

The 27-year-old striker has been given permission to travel to the Dutch capital and undergo his medical tomorrow. Akpom is set to sign a five-year contract.

Chuba Akpom scored 28 goals in 38 Championship appearances for Middlesbrough last season, making him the league’s top scorer.

After an outstanding campaign, several sides including Ligue 1 side Lens have shown serious interest in the former Arsenal, Hull City and PAOK striker.

Ajax have made their move, and now the Dutch giants look to be winning the race.

Middlesbrough had activated a one-year extension on his contract as he had a year remaining on his deal, but the centre-forward will leave to test himself on a larger stage.

Akpom had previously voiced his desire to remain with Middlesbrough, even though he acknowledged that certain variables were beyond his influence.

His career began at Arsenal, graduating from their Hale End academy before he embarked on a series of loans within the Football League before finally establishing himself at Greek club PAOK.

He returned to English football and played a vital role as Boro finished in the promotion play-off spot last season.

As Ajax bid to rebound from a disappointing finish in the previous Eredivisie season, the acquisition of Akpom will help strengthen their forward line.
