Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam have announced the signing of Arsenal’s Hale End Academy product Chuba Akpom from Championship outfit Middlesbrough FC, Reelradio.com.ng reports.
Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed that they are paying a transfer fee of €12.3 million (approximately N10.4 billion in Nigerian currency) to Middlesbrough and this amount can rise to a maximum of € 14.3 million due to performance-related add-ons.
Akpom has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at Ajax until the end of the 2027-2028 season.
Akpom signed a multi-year contract in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Englishman is happy to be in Amsterdam. “It’s a pleasure. From what I’ve seen this is a beautiful place. Hopefully I can settle down as soon as possible.”
“Of course I am very happy to sign with Ajax. It is a large, special club with a great history. It was therefore not a difficult decision”, were the attacker’s first words when he got out of the car at the stadium. ArenA deck.
The brand new Ajax acquisition is aware that many top strikers have been under contract in Amsterdam. “Ibrahimovic, Suárez and players like that,” said Akpom. “Ajax is a club with a lot of history and hopefully I can add some history to it.”
It was not a difficult choice for Akpom to move to Amsterdam. “The name itself says enough, the football club Ajax. When you put on this shirt you have to know what it stands for: the history and the success that the club has had in Europe and the Netherlands,” says the 27-year-old attacker.
Akpom therefore takes over number ten from Tadic. These were the last ten players who wore the special shirt number in Amsterdam service: Tadic, Hakim Ziyech, Davy Klaassen, Siem de Jong, Miralem Sulejmani, Albert Luque, Wesley Sneijder, Steven Pienaar, Rafael van der Vaart and Richard Knopper.
