The management, staff, and players of Akwa United Football Club are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of their goalkeeper coach, Moses Effiong (MON), a member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team.
Coach Effiong Moses, a former Green Eagles goalkeeper who also played for New Nigerian Bank, died on Sunday, January 26, 2025, in the United States of America, after a long battle with illness. He was surrounded by his family.
The club received the news of Coach Effiong’s passing with shock, as confirmed by his family member in America. Chairman of the club, Elder Paul Bassey, broke the news to the staff, describing the late coach as a “complete gentleman, core professional football coach, and a wonderful family man.”
Coach Effiong Moses was an integral part of Akwa United’s coaching crew, contributing to the team’s successes, including two FA Cup titles in 2015 and 2017, as well as the NPFL title in 2021.
The club will deeply miss Coach Effiong’s expertise, dedication, and commitment to the team’s success. His legacy will continue to inspire and motivate the players and staff.
The family of Coach Effiong Moses will communicate the details of his funeral arrangements in due course.
