Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, has expressed his belief in the potential of Victor Boniface as a top-tier forward.

The Nigerian striker has netted five goals in eight matches across all competitions for the reigning champions of the German Bundesliga, and Alonso is confident that the 23-year-old possesses numerous attributes that could elevate him to the level of Chelsea and Ivory Coast icon, Didier Drogba.

“He is incredibly powerful and poses significant challenges for opposing teams. He demonstrates skill on the ball, excels in confined spaces, and enjoys operating within the penalty area,” Alonso remarked, noting that Boniface still has room for improvement to reach the heights of the legendary striker.

“At times, he needs to adopt a more aggressive approach when attacking in the box, as evidenced by his offside goal. However, this is part of his development. We must support and encourage him. Additionally, he should work on making more effective decisions when opportunities arise in open spaces,” Alonso stated, as reported by Kicker.de.

Boniface has faced criticism for his flamboyant style and occasional antics; however, Granit Xhaka, a former Arsenal player now with Bayer Leverkusen, asserts that the team has adapted to the Nigerian’s approach. He emphasizes that as long as Boniface continues to contribute goals, his behavior can be overlooked.

“The young man relishes playing football and aims to savor every moment on the field, and we grant him that freedom. Naturally, we also recognize his efforts, including his defensive contributions. He consistently scores crucial goals. He is entitled to express himself in such a manner as long as he finds the back of the net and helps us secure vital points,” Xhaka stated to Kicker.
