Kenyan international Benson Omala has taken the drastic decision to terminate his contract with Lebanese club Al Safa Sporting due to unpaid wages. The striker, who joined the club just three months ago, has been left with no choice but to seek a release from his contract after the club failed to pay him for an extended period.
According to Omala’s father, Peter Oluoch, the player filed for contract termination in January after the club defaulted on his wages for three consecutive months. Fortunately, Omala’s contract included a clause that allowed him to leave the club under such circumstances, providing him with a way out of the precarious situation.
“We expect the club to issue his release letter by Tuesday,” Peter Oluoch revealed, indicating that the formalities of Omala’s contract termination are nearing completion.
Omala’s decision to terminate his contract with Al Safa Sporting is a clear indication of the challenges that many African players face when playing abroad. Unpaid wages, poor working conditions, and lack of support from clubs are just a few of the issues that players must contend with.
In this case, Omala’s contract included a safeguard that allowed him to leave the club if wages were not paid. However, not all players are as fortunate, and many are left to suffer in silence.
