Enyimba FC concluded their CAF Confederation Cup journey after finishing third in Group D. The team’s campaign ended on a disappointing note following a 3-1 defeat to Zamalek SC during their final group stage match at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.
Enyimba’s prospects for advancement were minimal, as they needed a victory while also relying on the result of the Al Masry versus Black Bulls Maputo match. Zamalek, having already secured the top position in the group with 11 points from five games, displayed no signs of easing off.
Despite their qualification, Zamalek took control early, scoring in the 29th minute with a header from Mostafa Shalaby, which significantly diminished Enyimba’s hopes. Shortly after the break, Zamalek extended their lead with a goal from Seifeddine Jaziri.
Enyimba narrowed the gap in the 57th minute with a goal from Ifeanyi Ihemekwele. However, their efforts to level the score were halted when Seifeddine Jaziri netted his second goal in the 87th minute, securing victory for Zamalek and eliminating Enyimba from the tournament.
In contrast, Al Masry advanced to the next stage with a strong 3-1 victory over Black Bulls Maputo, highlighted by Fakhreddine Ben Youssef’s first-half hat-trick.
With their Confederation Cup journey concluded, Enyimba will shift their focus to the NPFL, which resumes on January 23 with a match against Kano Pillars, as they strive for a late title challenge.
