Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup standout Oghenekaro Etebo has put an end to speculations about his future by reaching an agreement for a move to Turkish 1. Lig side Genclerbirligi.
Genclerbirligi’s interest in the versatile midfielder has been long-standing, and Etebo has now confirmed that the transfer to the Turkish second-tier club is finalized, with an official announcement expected soon.
It’s a bummer that the Super Eagles didn’t make it to the round of 16, but Etebo really stood out during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He played in all of the matches for the national team and showed some impressive skills.
Etebo was named the 2015 CAF Most Promising Talent of the Year, and during the 2018 World Cup group stage, he completed the most dribbles. In Nigeria’s opening match against Croatia in Group D, he attempted nine dribbles and completed all of them, despite Nigeria’s 2-0 loss.
After being let go by Stoke City, Etebo spent the last year scouting for a new club. Despite receiving two lucrative offers from Brazilian teams, the Lord Honour FC alumnus declined as he aimed to secure a move back to Europe.
Etebo’s previous stint in Turkey with Galatasaray saw him feature in 29 matches across all competitions during the 2020-2021 campaign while on loan from Stoke City.
Besides the teams mentioned earlier, the 2016 Olympics bronze medalist has also been a part of Warri Wolves, Feirense, Las Palmas, Getafe, Watford, and Aris Thessaloniki during his career.
