According to reports from Reelradio.com.ng, Janne Andersson, the former manager of the Sweden national team, is said to be the frontrunner for the position of head coach for the Super Eagles.
While the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not yet made an official statement, sources from Score Nigeria indicate that the 61-year-old is set to assume the managerial duties of Nigeria’s national team.
Following seven years with Sweden, Andersson wrapped up his tenure in November 2023.
Despite previously declining an offer from Latvia, he is now in line to become the second Swedish coach to lead the Super Eagles.
This follows in the footsteps of Lars Lagerbäck, who managed Nigeria during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Thomas Dennerby, another Sweden, left his mark on Nigerian football by coaching the Super Falcons at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Andersson’s managerial track record is impressive, as he steered IFK Norrköping to their first Allsvenskan title in 2016, subsequently landing him the Swedish national team job.
Andersson achieved notable successes during his time with Sweden, including leading the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after topping Group F ahead of South Korea, Mexico, and defending champions Germany.
Despite Sweden’s recent setbacks, including missing the 2022 World Cup and failing to qualify for Euro 2024, Andersson’s experience and background make him a strong candidate to lead the Super Eagles.
Nigeria’s national team is set to play against Benin Republic and Rwanda in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and Andersson’s potential appointment could bring a fresh tactical approach to the squad.
