Sources within the Nigeria Football Federation have disclosed to Reelradio.com.ng that Finidi George has stepped down from his role as the coach of the Super Eagles.
It appears his resignation may have been influenced by the Federation’s move to appoint a foreign Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles, according to the former Ajax Amsterdam winger’s decision.
The hiring of a Technical advisor is expected to undermine George’s authority over the squad, a situation that the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations champion may find difficult to accept.
Finidi was appointed as the head coach of the team, which has won the African championship three times, 47 days ago, following the exit of José Piseiro. Peseiro had guided the West African team to a runner-up position at the 2023 AFCON.
Immediately tasked with securing the Super Eagles a 2026 FIFA World Cup berth following their lackluster start in the qualifiers, he was also charged with ensuring the West African team’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite these expectations, the team’s performance in the World Cup qualifiers did not see an upturn. A home draw against South Africa and a disheartening defeat to Benin, under the leadership of former coach Gernot Rohr, hindered their progress.
Following the disappointing results against the Bafana Bafana and the Cheetahs, a meeting was convened by the NFF where it was decided that a Technical adviser be appointed, a decision which seems to have affected George’s to leave his position.
