Newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Eric Sekou Chelle, has announced his arrival in Nigeria on Sunday (today).
The Malian coach stated that departing from his position as head coach of MC Oran in Algeria was a difficult choice.
Chelle mentioned that the Algerian club was initially hesitant to let him go, but he successfully persuaded them to permit him to pursue a more significant opportunity in his coaching journey.
Chelle’s departure from MC Oran was a poignant occasion, marked by his official farewell following a 1-0 triumph against ESM Sétif in the Algerian Cup.
Unless there are unexpected developments, Chelle is anticipated to be introduced as the head coach of the Super Eagles later this week.
In what was his final match at the helm, Chelle conveyed his sincere appreciation to the club, its fans, and the city of Oran.
In his farewell address, the Malian stated, “This is my last match, and I will be in Nigeria on Sunday,” confirming his next steps.
“MC Oran officials wished for me to remain, but I cannot turn down the chance to coach Nigeria—Africa’s premier team and one of the finest globally. I am profoundly grateful to the supporters of Al Hamrawa, the residents of Oran, and all Algerians. Al Hamrawa will forever hold a cherished place in my heart.”
His appointment is viewed as a pivotal move for Nigeria as they seek to reinforce their supremacy in African football and beyond.
At 47, Chelle becomes the first non-Nigerian African to take on the role of head coach for the Super Eagles. He garnered the attention of Nigeria’s football authorities after leading Mali to a victory over Nigeria last year.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has entrusted Chelle with a significant responsibility: to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
