Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is set to undergo surgery on Tuesday in Finland having copped a 3rd degree contusion injury, PAOK FC manager, Răzvan Lucescu, confirmed on Monday, Reelradio.com.ng reports.
Troost-Ekong, who was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, sustained the injury during Nigeria’s second group match against Ivory Coast. Despite the setback, the defensive stalwart valiantly played through the pain for the remainder of the competition.
Initially sent for testing by PAOK, the former Trabzonspor and Watford defender’s diagnosis revealed a third-degree contusion characterized by severe muscle contusions and significant swelling.
A subsequent examination confirmed the severity of the injury, prompting the decision for surgery, “William Troost-Ekong was re-examined, which confirmed the initial diagnosis. The Nigerian has suffered a 3rd-degree contusion and will undergo surgery tomorrow (Tuesday) to repair his injury,” Lucescu told the press.
While the duration of Troost-Ekong’s recovery after surgery remains uncertain, Italian football journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggests a potential return before the conclusion of the season.
