Wolves are not expected to pursue a transfer for Kelechi Iheanacho from Sevilla this month, even though they initially showed interest.
This insight comes from Mick Brown, a former chief scout for Manchester United and Blackburn, who is well-connected in the football world. He mentioned that there are concerns regarding the 28-year-old’s capability to succeed in the Premier League.
This news follows a report from Football Insider on January 9, which stated that Wolves had begun preliminary discussions after Sevilla allowed him to leave on loan this month.
Brown noted that Wolves are currently in search of “game-changers” to bolster their squad as they aim to distance themselves from the relegation zone.
After securing victories against Leicester and Manchester United, along with a draw against Tottenham following Gary O’Neil’s departure, Vitor Pereira’s team has a renewed chance of survival despite a rocky start to the season.
At present, they find themselves in the relegation zone based on goal difference and are eager to enhance their squad to improve their chances of remaining in the league.
Iheanacho had been identified as a potential option as he has struggled at Sevilla, starting just seven games since leaving Leicester at the end of last season.
The Nigeria international has failed to score a league goal yet, with his three strikes for the Spanish club coming against lower-league opposition in the Copa del Rey.
As a result, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted that Wolves will be put off of making a move in favour of alternative options this month.
“There have been some concerns about his performances,” he disclosed.
“He would have good spells at Leicester and then drop off – I suppose the word I’m looking for is that he was in no way consistent.
“He’s gone abroad to Sevilla and that hasn’t helped, he’s not played well there.
“Wolves, in the situation they’re in at the moment, need players who are going to make an immediate impact and be game-changers for them.
“I don’t see Iheanacho as that player, and even though they’ve been looking at him, I’m not convinced Wolves will either.
“They’ll be weighing up a number of options and I’d expect them to go for somebody else.
“The one thing on his side, though, is availability. It’s not always easy to find somebody in the January window so if his club are willing to let him go, maybe they will act on that.”
