Manchester United have been forced to cancel their traditional annual end-of-season awards event after enduring a dismal 2023-24 campaign as the atmosphere is not in celebratory mood.
The end-of-season awards dinner was originally set for May 20, according to a report by The Athletic.
The Old Trafford giants usually hosts a formal dinner at during the end of the season to present in-club awards for both their men’s and women’s teams.
These awards include the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award and recognition for other honors, such as Goal of the Year and Breakthrough Young Talent.
Despite the event’s cancellation, the players will still receive the awards voted on by their peers, coaches, and fans without a ceremony.
United currently sit eighth in the Premier League table and is on the verge of their worst league finish in over three decades since placing 13th in the 1989-90 season.
However, Manchester United still has a chance to lay their hands on a trophy despite their poor season.
They are set to face their city rivals, Manchester City, in the 2024 FA Cup final scheduled for May 25 at Wembley Stadium in London.
Reports have stated that the cup final is also one reason manager Erik ten Hag and senior club officials canceled the annual end-of-season awards dinner, opting for the players to focus on preparing for the match.
The final is a rematch of the 2023 edition, which United lost 2-1.
