The new era of the Super Eagles has begun with the official unveiling of Finidi George as the coach by the NFF, Reelradio.com.ng reports.

On Monday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) presented the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi George, at a ceremony in Abuja. It is notable that the appointment comes after a rigorous selection process to ensure that the best candidate was chosen to lead the national football team.

The three-time African champions have appointed a new permanent coach who is a former winger and earned 62 caps for Nigeria. He was also part of the iconic 1994 AFCON winning side.

Finid George has taken over the Super Eagles role

In his first two friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in Morocco last month, George guided Nigeria to a 2-1 victory over Ghana, ending an 18-year winless run against the Black Stars. However, he suffered a 2-0 defeat against Mali days later.

After serving as an assistant to former head coach Jose Peseiro, the 53-year-old has now taken on the role on a full-time basis. This change occurred following the 2023 AFCON tournament.

The appointment of George was officially approved by the NFF board on the recommendation of their Technical and Development Committee.

At the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, the former Ajax, Real Betis and Ipswich winger was present alongside the Minister for Sports, Owan Enoh.

George was a renowned figure in Nigerian football, known for his exceptional skills and contributions to the ‘Golden Generation’ that achieved great success in the 1994 AFCON and the World Cup in the USA.

During his impressive international career that lasted over a decade, he earned four AFCON medals, including a gold in 1994, silver in 1992 and 2000, and bronze in 2002.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles had a tough time at the 2023 AFCON campaign in Ivory Coast and lost to the hosts in the final after a nail-biting penalty shootout.

George, who has an impressive track record, is entrusted with the responsibility of steering the team towards their fourth continental title and a first-ever World Cup knockout stage appearance. With his experience and expertise, he is expected to lead the team to success.
