Nigeria’s only representatives at the ITTF African Club Championships, the Canaan Queens from Calabar, have successfully made it to the semi-finals of the women’s competition in Tunis, Tunisia.
The women’s event features eight teams from Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ethiopia, and Madagascar, with Egypt’s Zamalek looking to defend their title from 2024.
In the men’s division, nine teams from Egypt, Algeria, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Madagascar, Congo DR, and Côte d’Ivoire are competing for the championship, with Egypt’s ENPPI as the reigning champions.
In their final group match, the Nigerian team faced a tough challenge, losing 3-0 to the defending champions Zamalek of Egypt, but still managed to secure second place in their group, allowing them to progress to the semi-finals.
The Calabar Queens are set to compete against Petrojet of Egypt in the first semi-final of the women’s event on Monday, February 24, at the El-Menzah Sports Hall in Tunis.
Competition Manager Ghazi Ben Hsen highlighted the strong participation in the Club Championships, noting that Madagascar, Côte d’Ivoire, and Congo DR are joining for the first time. He also mentioned that this tournament serves as a valuable preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup, which begins tomorrow.
