Nottingham Forest is optimistic about finalizing a new contract with their standout defender, Ola Aina, who has attracted the attention of major club Manchester City. Recent reports have linked Pep Guardiola’s side with a potential move for him. However, it appears that the Tricky Trees are poised to secure Aina with a long-term agreement soon.

Aina made his move to Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023 after his contract with Torino expired. The 28-year-old, a product of the Chelsea academy, has significantly improved since his return to England. He had a remarkable debut season and has continued to deliver exceptional performances in the early stages of the 2024/25 campaign.

He has participated in 19 league matches, contributing two goals. Aina has played the full 90 minutes in all but two of those games. His reliable defensive displays have been instrumental in the team’s impressive form in the Premier League, where they currently occupy second place in the standings.

While Aina’s contributions have been invaluable to the Tricky Trees, discussions regarding his future have intensified. He initially signed a one-year contract with Nottingham Forest, which was later extended for an additional year at the conclusion of the previous season. With his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, several top clubs are showing interest in the Nigerian international’s talents.

Manchester City unlikely to succeed in their pursuit of Aina

Manchester City has emerged as a potential option for the versatile full-back, who is capable of playing on either side of the defense. The club is actively seeking a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker and views Aina as a suitable candidate for their tactical framework.

The interest from Pep Guardiola’s side may entice the 28-year-old, who currently appears content at Nottingham Forest. Although he is now eligible to negotiate a pre-contract with a foreign club, Manchester City would need to pay a transfer fee if they wish to acquire him in January.

While City may be eager to secure his services, their efforts are likely to be thwarted, as Nottingham Forest remains confident in finalizing a new long-term deal with Aina. The club has been in discussions with the former Chelsea player for an extended period and is hopeful that he will agree to the contract. Additionally, the Tricky Trees could provide him with an opportunity to compete in European competitions next season, which he would undoubtedly find appealing.
