Akwa United will now play their home games at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, also known as the Nest of Champions, following approval by the Nigeria Premier Football League board, Reelradio.com.ng reports.
The Promise Keepers have been playing their home games in Eket in recent times citing the busy schedule of the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
The Magnificent Stadium hosted Super Eagles 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games as well as 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
It also hosted Enyimba’s African Football League and Rivers United’s CAF Confederation Cup games.
In a letter released by Stanley Ike-Richard, For the Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL, Davison Owumi, it was stated that Akwa United had their letter received by the board and their request had been granted.
The one-time NPFL champions will now return to the Nest of Champions for the second round of the NPFL, to prosecute the remainder of their games, with the imperative to make sure the necessary logistics and arrangements are available for smooth running of games.
Akwa United will host champions Enyimba FC in the presence of their fans on Monday in matchday 23 as they look to move out of the relegation zone.
The previously adopted the Eket Township Stadium as their home ground this season with the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium closed for international games.
Akwa United currently occupy 18th position on the NPFL table with 21 points from 22 games.
