Leicester City has officially announced the hiring of Ruud van Nistelrooy as their new manager.
The former Manchester United star has made a rapid return to the Premier League following his interim role at Old Trafford. Van Nistelrooy takes over from Steve Cooper, who was dismissed after just five months in charge of the club.
His primary objective will be to ensure the Foxes remain in the Premier League, as the team currently sits in 16th place following a recent 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, a loss that ultimately led to Cooper’s departure.
Cooper, who previously managed Nottingham Forest, had only replaced new Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca during the summer but found himself under pressure after a four-match winless streak with Leicester.
In contrast, Van Nistelrooy achieved victory in three of his four matches while serving as interim manager at Manchester United after Erik ten Hag’s exit, who had reappointed the former striker as an assistant earlier in the summer.
Upon his appointment, Van Nistelrooy expressed his enthusiasm on the Leicester website: “I’m proud, I’m excited. Everyone I speak to about Leicester City Football Club is filled with enthusiasm.
“They share wonderful stories about the quality of the people at the Club, the supporters, and the impressive recent history of the Club. I’m eager to begin, to meet everyone, and to dedicate myself fully to the Football Club.”
He will take charge of the Foxes for the first time on Tuesday, when West Ham United visit King Power Stadium in the Premier League.
