Former Leicester City defender and Super Falcons player, Ashleigh Plumptre, has officially joined Al-Ittihad Ladies Club in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, Reelradio.com.ng reports.
The 25-year-old defender, who made 62 appearances during her three-year stint with Leicester City, left the club after her contract expired.
Plumptre has been a high-profile free agent over the past month and was expected to remain in Europe but decided to embrace a new challenge in Saudi Arabia.
“Football for me has always been about connecting, not just more with myself, but with the people I’m surrounded by whether that’s teammates, staff and everything I’ve done so far in my career it’s been about representing something bigger than myself,” she said in a club video.
“Joining Al-Ittihad I feel as if I’ll have so many opportunities on and off the pitch to be able to learn about football here.
“I don’t come here with any expectations, I come here being myself and I hope I can learn and take so much from the environment both as a football player but more importantly as a human being and I’m already feeling that.
“I’m just looking forward to getting this journey started with this team and seeing what we can achieve in every aspect.”
Prior to Plumptre’s arrival, Morocco’s Ibtissam Jraïdi was the only player in the Saudi Women’s Premier League that featured at this year’s Women’s World Cup.
The new Saudi Women’s Premier League season is set to kick off on October 13 and Plumptre could yet be followed by a few more notable signings before then.
