Their managers might argue that at least ‘they’re getting into the right areas’, but this list of Premier League players will want to improve on their record around goal to date.
Ranking the Premier League players who have missed the most big chances so far this season:
Marcus Rashford – Manchester United
Marcus Rashford produced the best goalscoring form of his career last season, as the forward scored 30 goals in all competitions for Erik ten Hag’s side.
Rashford became the first player to reach 30 goals in a season for Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, but has had a modest start to the current campaign with one goal in four Premier League games.
It could, and perhaps should, have been more with Rashford having missed three big chances – defined as ‘a situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score’.
Darwin Nunez – Liverpool
Darwin Nunez had hit critics during a mixed first season at Liverpool, one which saw the forward score nine league goals in 23 appearances. Nunez ranked third for big chances missed and joint-first for times the woodwork was struck last season, but will hope for improvement this time around.
So often at the centre of the chances, Nunez has missed three big chances so far this season. Recent performances have been encouraging however, with a match-winning brace at Newcastle before the international break.
Erling Haaland – Manchester City
The Manchester City goal-machine is human, after all.
Just two players have missed more big chances than Haaland so far this season, who coincidentally led the Premier League for big chances missed (28) last season.
Just imagine the goal return he could have totalled.
Abdoulaye Doucoure – Everton
Abdoulaye Doucoure features on this list after being granted licence to maraud forward from the Everton midfield under Sean Dyche.
Doucoure has scored once in four games for the Toffees this season, but perhaps should have added to that total having posted He shows the freedom he has been given to join the attack.
Arnaut Danjuma – Everton
Arnaut Danjuma has formed part of an Everton side who have been the most wasteful team in the Premier League this season.
The Toffees have scored just two goals, the biggest underperformance in the division. Danjuma and Doucoure have been the chief culprits of Everton’s missed opportunities, with three big chances missed apiece.
Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa
Ollie Watkins missed out on a place in the England squad for September’s international break following a goalless start to the Premier League campaign.
Watkins is without a goal in four games and has spurned four big chances, the second-highest figure in the division.
Unai Emery will hope the 27-year-old can rediscover the form he showed during last season’s run-in, as Watkins hit 12 goals in 19 games to fire Aston Villa to Europa Conference League qualification.
Nicolas Jackson – Chelsea
Nicolas Jackson leads the Premier League for big chances mixed, in what has been a mixed start to his Chelsea career.
Jackson has impressed with his all-round game and movement, but his finishing is in need of refinement on the evidence of his early performances at Stamford Bridge.
Jackson has spurned six big chances in four Premier League appearances, including a glorious chance he fired the ball over a gaping goal in the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out.
There’s room for improvement from the 22-year-old.
