The countdown to the CAF Women’s Champions League is underway, with Sunday, November 3, marking precisely six days until the tournament commences in Morocco.
The North African country will host Africa’s premier women’s club competition from November 9 to November 23, featuring eight formidable African women’s clubs vying for the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League trophy.
The inaugural final of the CAF Women’s Champions League took place on November 19, 2021, at the 20 June Stadium in Cairo, Egypt. This event transcended a mere football match; it represented a significant milestone for women’s football in Africa.
This occasion heralded the beginning of what has evolved into a dream competition for aspiring female footballers throughout the continent.
South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns emerged as champions, achieving this feat with remarkable flair by winning all their group matches and narrowly defeating Malabo Kings in the semi-finals.
In the final, they faced Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies, who also had an impressive journey through the group stages and semi-finals, overcoming AS FAR, with Evelyn Badu shining brightly.
The historic final was fiercely contested, ultimately favoring the South Africans, who demonstrated greater precision in front of goal.
The agile and talented Chuene Morifi opened the scoring in the first half, while veteran striker Andisiwe Mgcoyi secured the victory in the second half, leading Mamelodi Sundowns to be crowned the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League champions.
The South Africans were unable to defend their title the following year, falling to AS FAR of Morocco in the final. However, they reclaimed their championship in the 2023 edition held in Côte d’Ivoire, triumphing in style to secure their second title.
Now, the South Africans travel north in pursuit of what would be a record third CAF Women’s Champions League title in four years.
