New England Revolution midfielder Alhassan Yusuf joined the Super Eagles camp early Wednesday, connecting with his teammates ahead of the critical World Cup qualifier against Rwanda on March 21.
Before Alhassan’s arrival, nine players had already landed in Kigali by Tuesday morning, including Captain William Troost-Ekong, Wilfred Ndidi, Calvin Bassey, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Joseph Aribo, Igoh Ogbu, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Ola Aina. Sadiq Umar joined the squad later that evening, swelling the numbers as preparations ramp up.
Prior to this, six players made their way to camp on Monday evening, such as Simon Moses, Victor Boniface, Raphael Onyedika, Jordan Torunarigha, Stanley Nwabali, and Samuel Chukwueze. This followed the early arrival of another six players on Sunday evening, including stars like Victor Osimhen and Tolu Arokodare.
Alhassan’s presence enhances the midfield options for head coach Eric Chelle, who will rely on a diverse skill set as Nigeria looks to secure a vital victory. The 24-year-old shone during the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast, but an injury against Equatorial Guinea meant he subsequently lost his spot in the squad.
Previously showcasing his talent in the Belgian Pro League, Alhassan has made the transition to MLS, where he has continued to make an impact. Since joining, he has participated in four matches, playing primarily as a defensive midfielder in three outings and also taking on the role of left midfielder once.
Chelle is optimistic that Alhassan’s versatility will provide him with more tactical options as Nigeria strives to revive their World Cup qualifying campaign. Currently seated in fifth place in Group C, the Super Eagles must secure maximum points to keep their hopes alive.
The Malian tactician is eager to ramp up preparations for the match, now with 23 players in camp. Nigeria is set to take on Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium this Friday.
