Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, has indicated that there has been “progress” in his contract discussions, amid ongoing speculation regarding his future with the team.
His current contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the season, coinciding with the contracts of teammates Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, which also end in June.
While Real Madrid appears optimistic about acquiring Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer, there is still hope on Merseyside that both Van Dijk and Salah will agree to new contracts. Following Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Fulham on Sunday, the Netherlands international shared a positive update.
“There is progress, yes,” the 33-year-old stated.
When asked if this suggests he will remain at Anfield next season, Van Dijk replied, “I don’t know, we’ll see. These are internal discussions, and we will see what happens.”
“I have a deep affection for the club and the fans, who have consistently supported us. We wanted to give them something to cheer about. I hope they will be there again on Sunday [against West Ham United] to create an incredible atmosphere for us as always.”
