Victor Boniface, the forward for the Super Eagles, has expressed confidence in his chances of securing the African Player of the Year award, positioning himself ahead of Ademola Lookman.
The Bayer Leverkusen striker also provided commentary on Victor Osimhen’s aspirations to compete in the Premier League, particularly in light of summer transfer rumors linking him to Chelsea.
Boniface enjoyed a remarkable debut season, netting 21 goals and contributing 10 assists across all competitions, which played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s triumph in both the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal.
Nevertheless, he was unable to secure victory in the UEFA Europa League final, where Ademola Lookman’s hat-trick propelled Atalanta to success.
Lookman’s exceptional performance, along with his other achievements during the season, earned him a nomination for the Ballon d’Or.
Boniface challenges the idea that Lookman is the frontrunner for the award, emphasizing that his own achievements should not be disregarded.
“I believe it is likely to be a contest between Lookman and myself. I consider myself a strong candidate for the African Footballer of the Year, as I hold my abilities in high regard,” he stated in an interview with SportyTV.
“If we are evaluating based solely on last season’s performances, I would choose myself.”
Additionally, Boniface commented on Victor Osimhen’s transfer situation this summer, highlighting the striker’s keen interest in joining the Premier League amidst rumors linking him to Chelsea.
“There are three parties involved—Napoli, Chelsea, and Victor Osimhen. Osimhen possesses a strong mentality. I am aware that he is eager to make a move to the Premier League,” Boniface remarked.
“I can confirm this because we had a conversation, but the outcome remains uncertain. He knows that I always wish him success.”
He also addressed the rumors regarding Osimhen’s potential move to Saudi Arabia, expressing his thoughts on the possibility of playing in the Saudi Pro League.
“There are events that have transpired that remain unknown to the public, yet people continue to speculate online. There are certain details that are not widely understood. As I mentioned earlier, I am not considering a move to Saudi Arabia.”
Boniface has continued to demonstrate his remarkable form for Leverkusen this season, contributing 5 goal involvements (4 goals and 1 assist) in six matches.
