Weghorst came off the bench to score the winner for the Netherlands, who came from behind to beat Poland 2-1 in their opening match at Euro 2024 at Volksparkstadion.
The Poles took the lead against the run of play when Buksa got on the end of Zielinski’s inswinging corner from the left and planted his downward header into the bottom-right corner.
However, the Oranje levelled through Gakpo, whose deflected effort from range wrong-footed Szczesny on its way into the net.
The Liverpool man should’ve scored again soon after, getting onto Ake’s cutback before lifting his strike over the bar.
Kiwior and Zielinski forced Verbruggen into good saves after the restart, but the Netherlands won it through Weghorst, who scored just two minutes and 18 seconds after coming off the bench.
The forward latched onto a pass from Ake and fired his low strike under Szczesny from inside the box.
With the Netherlands netting the winner from their only shot on target in the second half, Poland will be hoping Lewandowski is back for their game against Austria, with the Dutch up against France next.
